WHOIS Lookup – Check Domain Registration Details

Look up the registration details of any domain: who registered it, when it expires, which registrar manages it, and which nameservers it uses. Works for .com, .net, .org, .io, .dev and 1000+ TLDs — powered by RDAP, the modern successor to the classic WHOIS protocol.

What Is WHOIS and What Does It Tell You?

WHOIS is a public database of domain registration information. When someone registers a domain, the registrar stores details including the registration date, expiry date, registrar name, and nameservers. WHOIS lets anyone look up this information — useful for checking if a domain is available, verifying ownership, investigating suspicious sites, or monitoring your own domain's expiry.

  • Expiry Dates: Know exactly when a domain expires — useful for snatching expiring domains or monitoring your own.
  • Nameservers: See which DNS provider manages a domain. Helps verify DNS migrations or investigate misconfigurations.
  • Registrar: Identify which registrar holds the domain registration.
  • Status Codes: Understand what ICANN status codes like clientTransferProhibited or pendingDelete mean for a domain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does WHOIS show "REDACTED FOR PRIVACY"?

Since GDPR (2018), most domain registrars offer privacy protection services that replace personal contact details with generic redacted text. The domain is still registered, but the owner's name, address, email, and phone number are hidden. This is now the default for most consumer domain registrations.

What does "clientTransferProhibited" mean?

clientTransferProhibited is one of the most common domain status codes. It means the registrar has locked the domain to prevent unauthorised transfers to another registrar. This is a security measure — most active domains have this status. It does not affect the website or email in any way.

What is the difference between WHOIS and RDAP?

WHOIS is the legacy protocol (plain text, port 43) that has been used since the 1980s. RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) is the modern replacement — it uses HTTPS, returns structured JSON, supports internationalised domain names better, and handles privacy more consistently. ICANN now requires all gTLD registries to support RDAP. This tool uses RDAP for more reliable and structured data.

What does "pendingDelete" mean?

A domain with pendingDelete status has expired and is scheduled for deletion from the registry. Once deleted, it becomes available for anyone to register. The pendingDelete period typically lasts 5 days for .com/.net/.org domains. After that, the domain is released for re-registration.

Can I look up any domain TLD?

This tool supports most generic TLDs (.com, .net, .org, .io, .dev, .app, etc.) and many country-code TLDs. Some ccTLDs (country-code TLDs) operate their own RDAP infrastructure that may not return full data — in those cases, the tool will show what's available or indicate the TLD is not supported.
